If your AOL account has been hacked, you first need to reset your account username and password before any changes can be made. If you delete one of the seven AOL usernames connected to an account, but do not delete the entire account, the hacked username can be removed.  You must first convert your paid AOL account to a free account and then remove the free account. If you delete your free account, you will lose access to the account and all emails connected to the account permanently.

Steps First Reset Password

Browse to my AOL account (link to resources). On the Sign In screen, click "Forgot Password?"

In the Username or Email field, enter your AOL username or email address. Type the words in the image of CAPTCHA, then select "Next."

Select your account by receiving a text message to your registered mobile number to confirm your ownership. Enter the mobile phone number associated with the account and click "Send." In the prompt on the screen, type the five - digit confirmation code in the text message.

Confirm your account's ownership by receiving an email to a registered alternative email address. To send the email, select "Next" and wait until it arrives. To reset your password, click on the link in the email.

Confirm your account's ownership by answering questions about your account security and providing personal data. In the box provided, type the answer to the security question. Choose "Holder of account," In the boxes provided, type your first and last name. Alternatively, select "Personal Details" and type in the boxes provided your date of birth and zip code. Another option is to select "Alternate Email" and enter your alternative email address in the provided box. Click on 'Next.'

Type in the password prompt a new password of six to 16 characters. To confirm, press "Tab" and type again. To complete the password reset process, click "Next" and then "Done."

Remove AOL Username but not Primary Account

Browse to My Account and Login with your new username and password. Answer the account security Question and click on “Continue."

In the Additional Screen Names box, locate the screen name you want to remove, click the red "X" to delete it and select "Delete" to confirm.

Remove Paid AOL Account

Browse to My Account and Login with your new username and password. Answer the account security Question and click on “Continue."

Choose "I Already Have a High-Speed Connection" and click "View Plans."

Check your current paid subscription information and select at the bottom of the screen "Cancel my billing."

Check the confirmation page and the proposal to switch to a low-cost plan. Choose a reason to cancel your service and select "Cancel My Billing" to convert your AOL account to a free account.

Follow the steps in the next section to remove your free AOL account.

Browse to My Account and Login with your new username and password. Answer the account security Question and click on “Continue."

Choose "I Already Have a High-Speed Connection" and click "View Plans."

Review your current subscription information, and choose "Cancel" at the bottom of the screen.

Read the notices on the effect of your AOL subscription cancellation. Select a reason to cancel, then click "Cancel AOL" to remove your account permanently.
